What is a TEW Group?

The first Terrorism Early Warning Group was created in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1996. This countywide group — including local law enforcement agencies, fire departments, public health departments and the FBI — was created to monitor trends and assess threats that could result in terrorist attacks in Los Angeles County.

Based on the success of the Los Angeles TEW, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security encouraged other states and metropolitan areas to form their own TEWs. Kansas City is one of 30 urban areas across the country to receive federal funds to support a TEW through the Urban Areas Security Initiative.

The Kansas City Regional Fusion Center

The Kansas City Regional Fusion Center brings local, state and federal law enforcement officials together with public and private organizations to detect, deter and respond to terrorist threats in the Greater Kansas City community.

The Fusion Center's Interagency Analysis Center collects information from a variety of sources. This data is evaluated and analyzed in an effort to identify potential trends or patterns of terrorist or criminal operations within the region.
